St. Margaret's Guild Moves 2009 Showhouse

Once upon a time, St. Margaret's Guild specialized in showcasing renovated Meridian-Kessler houses. Now that they've set their sites on sites up north in Hamilton County that fit the McMansion designation, they've run into snags.

According to the Indianapolis Business Journal, "For a second time in four years, organizers of the Decorators’ Show House will have to relocate their spring design extravaganza after a falling-out with the initial donor."

Instead of 4502 Panthera Leo Drive, they'll be using a 13,000-square-foot, six-bedroom house at 1388 Queens Way, also in Carmel, for the 25 April - 10 May event.

Decorators’ Show House, in its 48th year, is the guild’s primary fund-raiser for Wishard Health Services.

Reservations are highly recommended and can be made by calling the restaurants directly or online using OpenTable.com.(Most, but not all restaurants participating in Devour Downtown offer online reservations through OpenTable.com, and, in the opinion of this Indianapolis Observer, the rest had better get with the program -- which is national in scope.)

Marcus Schrenker

Indy's missing financial executive continues to make headlines in the United States, and around the world.

Marcus Schrenker, President/Chief Compliance Officer of Heritage Wealth Management, located at 11206 Fall Creek Road, Indianapolis, evidently parachuted out of his small plane over Alabama Sunday and disappeared. His single-engine Piper Malibu Meridian continued flying on autopilot and crashed in Florida's panhandle.

Both financial troubles and a pending divorce are said to be contributing factors.

The latest news is here: Schrenker evidently picked up a motorcycle and supplies he'd stashed in the Harpersville-Childersburg area, near where he bailed out of his plane.

Some more places to read all about it are here, here, here and here.

UPDATE (as of 14 January):
Yeah, they got him. At a campground in Florida. Now comes the long, slow process of the justice system.

UPDATE II (as of 15 January):
The wrapup story in The New York Times.

Silent Sellers

Three installations titled "Silent Sellers" by Jodie Hardy are on display at the east façade of Chase building on North Pennsylvania Street in downtown Indianapolis through May.

They're part of "The Picture Windows: Urban Interpretations" project, created to revitalize office and storefront windows in high traffic downtown areas by commissioning local artists to create specific artwork for each window. The privately-funded project was made possible by the Indianapolis Development Commission through the financial support of Lilly Endowment, Inc.

Hardy's striking, iconic installations are based upon picture windows used for displaying retail wares, the fashion industry's use of photography and visual merchandising to seduce passersby and the physical and emotional pressures those fashions place on women. The windows feature a highly stylized photo spread, "caution tape dress" wearing mannequin, and more than 100 dolls dressed in caution tape dresses.

Historic Wishard Murals

In 1914, a group of renowned Hoosier artists painted murals for the benefit of patients at Wishard Memorial Hospital (then known as Indianapolis City Hospital).

The conservation department of the Indianapolis Museum of Art has been working to bring these murals back to their original condition since 2004, when they conserved a painting by Indiana African American artist William Edouard Scott.

Since then, the conservation of several works by such Indiana artists as T. C. Steele, Clifton Wheeler, J. Ottis Adams and Wayman Adams has been completed.

The exhibition includes a cleaned work by T. C. Steele, along with before and during treatment photographs, and a Carl Graf painting divided into partially cleaned and fully cleaned surfaces.

It opens 17 January in the IMA's Alliance Gallery, running through 29 March 2009.

Pictured is "Simeon and the Babe Jesus" by William Edouard Scott.

It's Girl Scout Cookie Time

Or, at least this Indianapolis Observer thinks that Girl Scout Cookie Time starts tomorrow, when scouts in the Central Indiana region start taking orders.

That's what it says in today's Indianapolis Star, but there's nothing on the council's website with any information.

The actual cookies will be delivered after 10 February, The Star says. Each box costs $3, and the proceeds are split by the troops and the council.
