Mourdock: Repeal the 17th Amendment

Here's the report from Salon.com:

"Richard Mourdock, who recently ousted longtime Republican Indiana Sen. Dick Lugar in a GOP primary, [said], 'You know the issue of the 17th Amendment is so troubling to me … The Senate was there to represent the states. In other words, the government of the states', Mourdock said in May."

Yep. The Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate doesn't think the voters of Indiana should elect their senators.

It sounds like he voiced the reason U.S. Senators were originally elected by state legislatures, instead of directly by the voters. Mourdock is a bit of a historian, and he's not wrong about that history. That's not to say it's a good idea to reverse direction now. Still there is certainly something to be said about the encroachment of national power on the state by Congress. Senators elected by state legislatures probably wouldn't have been as quick to step on the toes of the states.
